Class Descriptions

Class Description

Private voice lessons provide students with the basic foundations of singing technique along with an introduction to vocal performance, repertoire, and appreciation. Vocal lessons help you, as a singer, to achieve a finer grasp of a musical style, vocal techniques performance techniques, focus, proper articulation, and delivery. You will learn how to use proper breath support, increase vocal range, sing with ease and clarity, learn to project your voice, and prepare for auditions.

Registration Information

Open to students ages 6-106!

30-Minute time-slots on the hour and half hour from 3:00-5:30 pm.

Weekly fee is $35, charged monthly at the beginning of each month. For example, if there are four Wednesdays in a single month, your account will be charged $140 at the beginning of the month. Auto-pay is required in order to register.

Class Description

This class will introduce students to the techniques used by actors who play musical and straight play theater scenes. Basic acting techniques will be taught through theater games as well as skits. Students will be given lessons in freeing the body of nervous tension, projection, articulation as well as developing confidence, presence, and emotional expressivity.

Theater classes have been proven to enhance a child’s Confidence, Public Speaking, Teamwork, Poise, Conversation, Social skills, and more!

Class Description

Acro combines acrobatic/gymnastics skills with dance. This 45 minute class focuses on skills such as somerfaults, splits, handstands, and backbends. This class will build strength, flexibility, coordination, balance and confidence.

It is required that Acro students also take a Jazz, Lyrical, or Musical Theatre class. This class does not perform in the Winter recital.

Class Description

Hip hop is a fun, high energy dance style that encompasses a wide range of street styles such as breaking, locking, and popping, set to upbeat, appropriate, hip hop music. Through this class, dancers develop musicality, creativity and coordination.

Dancers are encouraged to take jazz class in addition to hip hop.

Registration Information

  • Beginner Hip Hop: Open to all students who meet age requirement.
  • Intermediate/Advanced Hip Hop (Age 8+): Must have 2+ years of hip hop or jazz experience to register for this class or invitation from the instructor. Please contact brieanna@j-dapa.org for approval before registering.

Class Description

One of the most popular styles of dance – Jazz is an energetic and fun class set to upbeat music. A typical jazz class begins with a center warm up that strengthens and stretches the body. Students will then work on across the floor and/or center work focusing on turns, leaps, isolations and footwork.

  • Beginner Jazz, Beginner/Intermediate Jazz, Adult Jazz/Lyrical Combo: Open to all students who meet age requirements.
  • All Intermediate/Advanced Classes: In addition to class-specific requirements listed below, all students must have prerequisite knowledge of dance terminology and ability to independently execute skills such as jete, pirouettes, chaine turn, plie, pose, 5 positions of jazz, chasse etc. Students without knowledge or ability to perform these steps will be asked to join the beginner level class. Please contact brieanna@j-dapa.org for approval before registering.
  • Intermediate/Advanced Jazz (Age 8+): Must have 2+ years of jazz experience to register for this class or invitation from the instructor.
  • Intermediate/Advanced Jazz (Age 13+): Must have 3+ years of jazz experience to register for this class or invitation from the instructor.

Class Description

Lyrical classes provide dancers with an outlet to tell the story of a song through their movements. This style of dance combines the technique of ballet, jazz and modern dance. Classes focus on turns, leaps, flexibility, creative expression and musicality.

  • Beginner Lyrical, Adult Jazz/Lyrical Combo: Open to all students who meet age requirements.

Class Description

Musical Theater is a jazz-based class with Broadway style dancing that focuses on learning performance skills such as connecting with an audience and using facial expression. In a typical class, students will participate in both dance and theater warm up exercises, theater games, acting out scenes, dancing to musical theater songs and much more!

Class Description

This 45 minute combo class offers students a basic introduction to jazz, ballet, tap, hip hop and acro. Each week, students will explore these styles of dance while working on coordination, gross motor skills, finding rhythm, and creative expression.

  • Pre-Peewee Combo: Students must be 3 by January 1st.
  • Peewee Combo: Students must be 5 by January 1st.

Class Description

Tap class gives the student a unique opportunity to transform into a percussive musician through the use of metal plates on the toe and heels of the dancer’s shoes. Tap focuses on creating rhythms and sounds which enhances a dancer’s ability to count music, feel the rhythm and increase their balance and coordination across dance genres.

  • Beginner Tap, Beginner/Intermediate Tap, Adult Tap: Open to all students who meet age requirements.
  • All Intermediate/Advanced Classes: Students without the knowledge or ability to perform the steps listed below for each class will be asked to join the beginner class instead. Please contact brieanna@j-dapa.org for approval before registering.
  • Intermediate/Advanced Tap (Age 8+): Must have 2+ years of tap experience to register for this class or invitation from the instructor. Students must be able to independently execute basic tap steps such as shuffle, flaps, cramp rolls, Buffalos and Irish.
  • Intermediate/Advanced Tap (Age 13+): Must have 3+ years of tap experience to register for this class or invitation from the instructor. Students must be able to independently execute basic tap steps such as Buffalos, time steps, Irish, flaps with speed and accuracy as this class will focus on more advanced steps and will not break down prerequisite skills covered in beginner level tap classes.

Costume Information

  • A $20 costume deposit for each class will be automatically charged to all student accounts in February
  • The remaining balance for each costume will be automatically charged to all student accounts in March
  • Cost for each costume in the Spring recital is $60 and under
  • Acro classes do not perform in the Spring Recital
  • Pre-Peewee and Peewee classes each perform two dances in the Spring Recital
